At Charlie’s Wags of Wisdom, we are proud to incorporate Animal-Assisted Therapy (AAT) into our coaching sessions through the loving presence of Charlie Brown, our certified therapy dog. While his calm nature and joyful energy create a beautiful environment for emotional growth, it’s important to understand both the benefits and responsibilities that come with working alongside a therapy animal.
Benefits of Animal-Assisted Coaching
Research shows that therapy animals can:
Reduce stress and anxiety
Improve focus, motivation, and emotional engagement
Help children build empathy, patience, and confidence
Increase self-esteem and encourage open communication
Charlie Brown’s presence helps children feel safe, heard, and supported — often unlocking emotional breakthroughs that traditional coaching alone may not reach.
Understanding the Risks
Even though Charlie Brown is certified through Alliance of Therapy Dogs, Inc. (ATD) and carefully trained, it’s important to remember that animals, like people, can react unpredictably to stress, excitement, or discomfort.
Possible risks include:
Allergic reactions (to fur or dander)
Minor scratches, licking, jumping, or nuzzling
Dirt or accidental contact with clothing
Unexpected behavioral reactions if Charlie feels threatened or unwell
Silvia Mesa is continuously monitoring both the environment and Charlie’s body language to ensure the highest level of safety for everyone involved.
Rules for Respectful Interaction with Charlie Brown
To ensure a safe and positive experience for all, we kindly ask that participants follow these simple rules:
- Treat Charlie Brown with kindness and respect at all times.
- Charlie will always be supervised by Silvia Mesa — he will never be left alone with a child.
- If Charlie seems tired or overwhelmed, he will take a break. His well-being matters, too!
- Gentle touch only — no pulling, hugging too tightly, or chasing.
- Ask before giving treats or commands — Silvia will guide all interactions.
Hygiene & Cleanliness
- Charlie Brown is professionally cared for to ensure cleanliness and comfort:
- Bathed and brushed before sessions
- Nails trimmed, paws cleaned, and teeth checked
- Antibacterial wipes and hand soap available in the coaching space
- When Animal-Assisted Coaching May Not Be Suitable
- While most children enjoy and benefit from time with Charlie, there are certain situations where participation may not be appropriate, including:
- A fear of dogs that interferes with comfort or focus
- Allergies that worsen during a session
- Any aggressive or unsafe behavior toward Charlie, including hitting, pulling, or teasing
- These will be handled gently and individually. Alternative coaching options will always be offered when needed.
Insurance & Certification
Silvia Mesa is fully insured through Business Insurers of the Carolinas, and Charlie Brown is covered under this policy. Proof of certification and insurance is available upon request.
